Effondrement ou ensevelissement : les modalités d’une logique conservatrice dans The Mists of Avalon

This paper aims at exploring the dynamics of erosion and collapse that can be observed throughout a neo-pagan rewriting of the Matter of Britain, The Mists of Avalon by Marion Zimmer Bradley (1982), that played a significant part in the popularization of the literary sub-genre that is Arthurian fantasy. By making Morgan Le Fay the narrator and the protagonist of what until then was an essentially masculine narrative, and by reintroducing magical and spiritual elements, the writer offers an original updating and raises the question as to what ideological systems the official story conceals. The disappearance of the Great Goddess’s traditions, which establishes a religious and political turning point in the novel, coupled with a specific regime of historicity, will be used as references for this research study.
Cet article propose d’explorer les dynamiques de l’érosion et de l’effondrement qui traversent une réécriture néo-païenne de la Matière de Bretagne ayant grandement participé à la popularisation du sous-genre littéraire que constitue la fantasy arthurienne, The Mists of Avalon de Marion Zimmer Bradley (1982). En faisant de Morgan Le Fay la narratrice et protagoniste d’un récit jusque-là essentiellement masculin, et en y réintroduisant du merveilleux et du spirituel, l’autrice en propose une actualisation originale et nous force à nous interroger : quels systèmes idéologiques dissimule l’histoire officielle ? Le tournant religieux et politique que constitue dans le roman la disparition des traditions de la Grande Déesse, associé à un régime d’historicité spécifique, servira de support à cette étude.
